Wines

Newbury Manor Hotel provides the finest wines along with our tantalising cuisine. Below is a list of our personally selected wines. You are sure to find one to compliment any dish.

~ Intro ~

Wine is a word of connotations, dreams and ideas.

The history of wine runs back before our knowledge. It emerges with civilisation itself from the east. The evidence from tablets and papyri and tombs –and does– fill volumes. Man as we know him, working and worrying man, comes on the scene with the support of a jug of wine.

Historical evidence gets closer to our experience with the expansion of the Greek Empire, starting a thousand years before Christ. It was then that first met the countries it was to make its real home: Italy and France . The Greeks called America Vinland from the profusion of its native vines 2000 years later. It seems probable that North Africa , Andalusia , Provence , Sicily , the Italian mainland and perhaps the black sea had their first vineyards in the time of Greek Empire.

Today the world has some 25 million acres of vineyards. They produce an annual crop of more than 40 000 million bottles of wine; enough to give every person in the world 10 bottles a year.

Yet wine, food and comforter as it is, is very far from being a cultural phenomenon, it is part of a cultural and agricultural pattern that is peculiar to the temperate zones of the earth where Mediterranean , or western man has flourished.

Our list is ever changing, and our suppliers are always looking for new producers that are different, fresh and up and coming
